Title: The Starless Sea Pdf A Novel
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues—a bee, a key, and a sword—that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians—it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also of those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose—in both the mysterious book and in his own life.
Complex fantasy novel “The Starless Sea” by Erin Morgenstern, Doubleday, 512 pages, Nov. 5, 2019.Zachary Ezra Rawlins is an emerging media graduate student in Vermont, studying video game design. His mother is a fortune teller in New Orleans. While he is in the university library, he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. There’s a story of an imprisoned pirate, a girl who is an acolyte and a boy. As he turns the pages, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. The details are too perfect to be fiction. How is that possible? The book, “Sweet Sorrows,” is older than he is.He checks out the book, which doesn’t have a barcode or an acknowledged author. Much of the book Zachary reads is about the Harbor on the Starless Sea, a giant, maze-like, library where all languages are comprehensible to everyone, and time moves differently. Potential guardians are tested and trained there.Kat Hawkins, whom he considers “almost a friend,” asks him to help teach a class where the discussion will be about gaming. A student librarian in that class tracks down the book to a donated collection.“The Starless Sea” is a story about stories. The main storyline is interspersed with fairy tales and other short stories. The chapters alternate between Zachary’s story and the other characters. There is a repeated motif of books, bees, owls and keys.Erin Morgenstern, who is also the author of “The Night Circus,” is a wonderful writer. This is a fantasy novel and does not have a straight-line plot. It is very complex and different. As one of the main characters, Dorian, says, “We’re here to wander through other people’s stories, searching for our own.”In accordance with FTC guidelines, the advance reader's edition of this book was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for a review.Poorly executed Wow this book didn’t work for me. Here’s why: I don’t think it’s spoilers but maybe you might if you have been waiting months to read this. You have been warned.I'm going to be brutally honest for a second here: This book lost me the moment we find out Keepers have their tongues cut off to better protect stories. That is one of my top five hangups in a book and reasons I will skip something. The story is interesting but I don't think the world building is done particularly well or that the manuscript was edited to tighten the plot as much as it could have. As I was reading, I kept thinking of other books I had read that do similar things in a slightly better way. The premise of the story here screams whimsy but the execution is all sharp edges which creates a weird tension where nothing quite works as well as it should.I also had no investment in the characters because of the disjointed narrative structure and it took way too long to get to the crux of the story. I'm still excited to try The Night Circus but I don't know how this one rates in comparison.Another magical book from Morgenstern [no spoilers] _The Night Circus_ is one of my favorite contemporary novels -- and her new one doesn't disappoint! If you love books that weave together fantasy and reality, you'll love her new novel. My copy arrived before the release date, and I devoured it in a few sittings. One of Morgenstern's strengths as a storyteller is her ability to transport her readers into other worlds, and this same ability is present in _The Starless Sea_, which follows protagonist Zachary Ezra Rawlins through a series of adventures in his quest to solve a mystery. This book is a page-turner, and it kept me up late so I could try to finish it -- and then once I got to the end, I didn't want the journey to be over.Happy reading!
