[Hill]’s got horror down pat, and his debut is hair-raising fun.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A relentlessly scary ghost story.” (Bookseller (London))“Powerful . . . a fast-paced plot that crackles with expertly planted surprises and revelations . . . a truly memorable debut.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“You can’t go wrong with Heart-Shaped Box.” Top Five Fiction-Books of 2007 (The Observer)“A fast-paced journey on wheels borrowed from hell’s used-car lot, and there aren’t a lot of comfort breaks...The pictures [Hill] painted colored my dreams and darkened my mood even after I’d put the book down.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer) Aging death-metal rock legend Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre: a cookbook for cannibals...a used hangman's noose...a snuff film. But nothing he possesses is as unique or as dreadful as his latest purchase off the Internet: a one-of-a-kind curiosity that arrives at his door in a black heart-shaped box...a musty dead man's suit still inhabited by the spirit of its late owner. And now everywhere Judas Coyne goes, the old man is there—watching, waiting, dangling a razor blade on a chain from his bony hand.

Kind of like eating a generic popsicle. You just gotta work through it and imagine it's fancy. Once again, I tried a Joe Hill book and was intrigued at first, but got run down by about half way through it. Mind you, I'm a very critical reader of fiction and it takes a lot to surprise or shock me. I don't know. I just didn't feel the magic here. The protagonist is almost someone I don't like as a person to be honest, but that's okay as far as plot ideas go for me. I liked the subtle psychological horror aspect, as opposed to a bloody shocking gorefest, but I think I just didn't like the characters enough to care if a ghost hurt them or not, so it really detracted from the suspense aspect for me. I wasn't scared if anything happened to the protagonist because he was kind of a douchebag, lol. Idk. It just wasn't magic for me.Heart Shaped Box I had read the description a fw times and finaly ordered both the kindle and a used paperback (The paperback was spur of the moment-I had forgotten I already had it on kindle. I put off reading it for quite a while for two reasons 1. Joe Hill is Stephen Kings' son and 2. I got bored one Sunday and watched a really bad movie called "Horns". I did not know that the author of the story was Stephen King's son when I watched it but wasn't real surprised when I found out. I loved Heart Shaped Box. It stood on it's own and I almost felt like Dean Koontz had been added to the mix. Stephen King is and always as been one of my 2 favorite horror authors-he's written books that changed the way I saw things but hes also written some that read like fast money books. Joe Hill left me feeling like Koontz's books do (and Stephen Kings) when they're done right. I even felt the tears on my cheeks when the dogs couldn't keep going. This one is a keeper. Was not able to put it down!!!! My intent was to savor this book, as it is only 400 pages, and enjoy it for at least a couple weeks. No such luck. Not since book 7 of Stephen King's Dark Tower series have I literally NOT been able to put a book down! I finished it in 2 nights, and I was as equally moved to tears by parts of the book toward the end as I was by the fact that the story was over, you know, that "what now?" feeling you get (well I do anyway) when you finish a really good read. Then, when I was looking on the internet to see if there were any talks about making a film about this fantastic book, I learned that Joe Hill is actually the son of Stephen King! Mind = blown. There have been talks, BTW, about a film version, and Mr. Hill has expressed interest in Russell Crowe to play the main character, Jude. Might I make a suggestion, Mr. Hill? The entire time I was reading your wonderful book, one person's face was stuck in my mind as the face of Jude - Rick Springfield. sincerely, humble horror-fiction enthusiast MRJ
